WHY IS ARTHUR MORGAN FROM RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 THE BEST CHARACTER IN VIDEO GAMES?

The western genre video game Red Dead Redemption 2, published by Rockstar Games, has been alive since its released. One of its causes is Arthur Morgan. *SPOILER ALERT*

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the legendary game that includes Arthur Morgan, the deepest and most real character in the game world. He isn't a character that can be described in a few sentences. Rockstar Games has outdone itself. Even John Marston who is the protagonist in Red Dead Redemption 1, remained in Arthur’s shadow.

The deeper and realistic side of Arthur Morgan comes up in side-missions.

They don’t give you Arthur as “Look this is him!”. In these side-missions, you are combining things in your mind. You can find out what kind of person from his reactions and actions. Most of the games include perfect or almost perfect characters. Even in RPG games, you can make your protagonist as Saint by your choices. But when it comes to Arthur, he is different. He isn't an actual living human but he has sins and merits, rights and wrongs. His sense of humor is good. He has seen through. His approach to events is different from other gang members, He is generous, reckless, a skillful man. He speaks when he has to speak, he is silent when he has to be silent.

Background of Arthur Morgan

Arthur Morgan was born in 1863. As a child, his mother died of unknown causes, while his father was a petty criminal and outlaw. Around 1877, Arthur was found as a 'wild delinquent' and lifted off the roads by Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews. Viewing the pair as proxy mentors, Arthur came to share Dutch's vision of a daily routine experienced liberated from the imperatives of progress and law and order. The pair taught him how to read, write, hunt, fight, shoot and ride, becoming their first protégé as well as one of the founding members of the Van der Linde gang.

As a young adult, Arthur met a girl named Mary Gillis where the two fell deeply in love and even became engaged. He befriended her younger brother Jamie and taught him horseback riding. However, Arthur’s lifestyle wasn’t tolerated by Mary’s family. Eventually, the couple separated.

In 1885, he met a 12-year-old boy named John Marston who had been saved by Dutch. John was raised alongside Arthur.

Some years later, Arthur met and slept with a 19-year-old waitress named Eliza, resulting in her becoming pregnant with their son, Isaac. Eliza knew that he was an outlaw. Arthur wasn’t wanting to promise anything but he kept supporting her and their son. Tragically one day, both Isaac and Eliza have been shot and killed by robbers, all for 10 dollars. Arthur didn’t go for revenge or seek justice. But his redemption started at that time. This unfortunate event made marks on Arthur’s personality. Later that he even avoid being in a relationship with women.

In 1894, a prostitute named Abigail Roberts joined the Van der Linde Gang. At some point, she fell in love with John Marston and became pregnant with their son named Jack. Arthur became a surrogate uncle figure towards him growing up.

Arthur’s illness.

Strauss is a moneylender and he wants Arthur to take back money from debtors. So, Arthur goes to beat the poor farmer guy and collect his debt. This tiny man also has tuberculosis. While Arthur punches him, the farmer spits in her face. But Arthur doesn’t mind about it and just keeps telling “If you don’t enough money, sell your house or sell your wife”. This event reminds us that Arthur also an outlaw and money comes first for him.

Henceforth, Arthur falls off from his house in the city. He immediately goes to see a doctor. The doctor tells him that he has TB. Tuberculosis is a contagious disease and there is no cure for that time.

After learning about his disease. Arthur’s personality changes into more soft. He knows that he will die eventually and because of that he helps people in need.

Remembering Eliza and his son.

Later in-game, Mr. Strauss askes for help from Arthur Morgan. In this side-mission, Arthur goes the collect money from his namesake (which is also a coincidence). He encounters his wife and his child instead of him. They tell Arthur to his debtor was dead and there is no money to collect. Suddenly Arthur makes them look like her deceased son and his mother. Then he realizes Leopold Strauss taking money from desperate people. Hereafter Arthur goes to kick Strauss out of the Van der Linde gang. This shows us Arthur is a discreet person that he cares for a stranger and his orphan child.

Also in the same town, Arthur realizes the wife of that farmer works as a prostitute. Arthur wants to help her and her son but they don’t want to face Arthur Morgan. As a redemption of his sins, Arthur insists to give money to them. At least he could do that for their sake.

Arthur blames Dutch for Hosea’s death

After Hosea’s death. Arthur wants to move as a wise person in the group. But fresh out of jail Micah Bell steals that position from him. The ridiculous part of this case, Micah is a newcomer to the gang and Arthur keeps telling that he doesn’t trust Micah. But since Dutch goes crazy with his utopic ideas, he doesn’t mind Arthur. He gives full authority to Micah.

Arthur’s bored of this situation and goes against Dutch and Micah. This is where the collapse of the Van der Linde gang starts. One by one gang members run out of the group. Eventually, there are two sides left. Arthur Morgan and Micah Bell. As expected gang leader Dutch Van der Linde stands with Micah Bell thanks to all his manipulations. While conflict between the two sides Arthur and John run away by horse. When Arthur's horse shot he gets down on his knees and calms his horse to a peaceful death. Even this shows us there is a good man inside of Arthur but it wrestling with a giant. In the end, Arthur Morgan dies. A good or bad ending depends on the player’s choices.

But from now, whatever player choices or what level is Arthur’s honor, Arthur Morgan remembered as a good friend and trustworthy, honest, helpful man as anyman could be.
